Visiting the Major Oak

Nottinghamshire has a lot of history, one of it's most famous residents of course, was Robin Hood. If you are visiting the area then one of the most likely places to be on your must see list is the Major Oak. This beautiful piece of forest is filled with the most majestic oak trees and the one everyone wants to see is the Major Oak.

At between 800-1000 years old, it is now held up by supports, but this is only to help it live longer! On our visit there, we learnt about oak trees, how they take 300 years to grow, live for about 300 years and then die over 300 years, the supports on the Major Oak help this process and mean the tree stays here for people to enjoy for much longer.

Oak trees are beautiful, the shapes they form and their leaves are unmistakeable, some of the older trees in this forest have bands on them to help them stay alive.

We looked at the tree stumps to see if we could figure out how old the trees had been when they fell, there were lots of information points, to help us learn about the wildlife and we saw lots of fungi.

Some of the stumps had been made into fairy houses, we loved this sign that told you not to poke things into the trees trunk as it is a home to many little creatures.

On a few of the trees there were these fab faces made from clay, feathers, twigs and leaves, we are definitely going to give these a try!

Onto the major oak itself, you can't really tell from the pictures the size of the tree, but believe me,  it is big.

The trunks on oak trees are hollow yet the outside keeps on growing, the hole in the trunk here an adult could get through standing up, the reason for the fibre glass on part of the trunk was due to some ignorant person trying to burn it down and this will stop any mold setting in.

This weekend there was an archer talking about the bow and arrows that Robin Hood and the knights of the crusades would have used, he gave an awesome display of archery.

He then went on to tell us about the different arrows, allowed the children to try holding the sword and went on to tell us about the battle of Agincourt. It was really interesting and gave an insight into the world of Robin Hood.

Sunday Park Fun

Yesterday we had a party and with the rain we didn't really get chance to get outside much, so we decided to head to the park this morning.

It was really warm and we didn't have to go far to feel like we were somewhere tropical, I have posted about the tropical house at our local park before but today we all got to visit and my son and husband had a run and my and my daughter did some scooting.

This park was the one my son had his accident at a few months back and it's the first time i've been back, was quite emotional!

The flowers and plants are simply gorgeous in the house...

We liked looking at the different leaves and these fig ones looked like dinosaur footprints...

Smelling the pretty flowers and looking at the bananas...

The gorgeous tropical plants and fruit looked beautiful covered in water droplets...

More looking at the tropical flowers and the koi carp in the pond...

It was a wonderful few hours spent looking round here and then walking to the park to play and just what we needed to blow away the cobwebs, although it was very warm!

Weekend in the Sun

This weekend has been just gorgeous, as we had a free weekend we decided to make the most of the sunshine and head out to Rufford Abbey and Sherwood Pines with a spot of gardening when we got home.

We visit Rufford a lot throughout the year, but I don't think we have been on such a spectacular day before, sun shining I donned my Sun Jellies and headed out into the sun.

It is hard to believe that less than a hundred years ago this was a lavish and beautiful house, now it is a ruin in places.

The cellar was really beautiful and the abbey is said to be haunted...

This tree was supposedly planted by Charles II, if you remember your history then Charles II was overthrown by Oliver Cromwell.

On to the playground, lots of tubes and places to run, jump and hide.

Onto the sensory garden, with lots of musical instruments made out of natural objects and things to run around, through and to see.

There is a tiny house with windows and in each window is a different object, I loved this foot.

 Running across the lawn

Further into the park is a section where you can watch cars driving through the ford, always lots of people watching and even at 21+10 I still enjoy it. We got the chance to drive through the ford the next day as we visited nearby Sherwood Pines, the kids loved it in the car as much as, if not more than watching ;)

Sunday we visited Sherwood Pines, there is lots to do. First we had a picnic and a kick of the football, then the children found some pinecones and sticks to make stickmen with.

We found this area where you could build dens, loads of logs to build up against the trees.

There are also lots of these houses in the woods which are perfect for chasing each other in and around.

Finally after a spot of gardening and therefore trees to get rid of we had an impromptu fire in the garden and of course marshmallows.

Overall the sun has been most welcome this weekend and what a lovely weekend it was, spending it just the four of us.

Sherwood Art Week

Yesterday we popped into our local town for the annual art week.

There was a craft fair on with some lovely local artists including Modflower who's gorgeous array of jewellery really stood out.

After a quick dance and drink we headed into Sherwood itself which had been yarn bombed.

Pretty much everything that could be decorated had been and I only wish it could stay like that, it really brightened up wome of the dullest parts of the town.

Gorgeous knitted flowers and cobwebs

Even the trees got wrapped up

Columns at an old bank being made to look pretty with mosaics

Loved these flowers on the railings
Evem the bus shelter got a make over

Looking comfy
Lots of local shops took part, displaying local artists

Gorgeous flowers

I love that knitting is coming back into fashion

Ugly bike stands made to look pretty

My sons school decorated this tree

Really love how it brightened things up even on a dull June day.
