Magic Moments 27/07/15

Jaime is on holiday this week so I get to look after the brilliant Magic Moments linkup, whilst she is more than likely enjoying some lovely sunshine we are enjoying a good dose of traditional British summer weather, rain!

I can't believe we are nearly in August, how time flies when you are having fun, my son has broken up from school and my daughter has her first pair of school shoes ready for September, it's all getting a bit serious.

I do love to read your Magic Moments, it always makes me smile and often gives me some great ideas, so without further ado lets get started!

As I was writing this post it suddenly dawned on me that we are in July, how did that happen?! Only few more months and my daughter will be starting school, a bitter sweet time which I am trying to put to the back of my mind!

Paint a Pot Fun

My daughter and I have written up a bucket list of things we wanted to do together before she heads off to school in September.

Once of those things was paint a pot, with it being my birthday and having nothing else planned, I took this opportunity to tick this one off our bucket list.

I had never been to a paint a pot before so it was all a bit new, but the lady at Razzle Dazzle Pots explained everything to us. First, we each had to choose a piece we wanted to paint, there was so much to choose, everything from animals to plates, bowls to vases, dragons to princesses! Eventually, we made a decision, I chose a vase and my daughter a unicorn.

It turns out that if you chose a blank canvas like a vase it is actually quite difficult to paint, unless you are artistic enough to come up something that is worthy of a place in your home. That said, I think I did quite a good job at creating something at least I am happy with.

My daughters unicorn was as bright and colourful as she is and really captured the essence of being four. I loved how the colours looked dull and lifeless before they were fired, but when we went to pick them up I think we were both surprised at the beautiful bright stripey unicorn that stood before us.

I am really happy with how they turned out and I am really excited to take my son back in the holidays so he can make one too, a great way to make a memory and something you can keep.

We have a few more things to do before she starts school, of which I am sure a few will appear on the blog.

Magic Moments 8/6/15

The lovely Jaime over at The Oliver's Madhouse is having a well earned holiday this week, so she has passed the Magic Moments torch on to me for a week, she'll be back next time though.

The thing I love about Magic Moments is that it gives you time to reflect on the week, from your child learning to write their name for the first time to learning to tie their shoe.

Making Time

A few weeks ago I was having lunch with some fabulous bloggers, one of those was the lovely Becky from Baby Budgeting and A Beautiful Space.

We were talking about my daughter starting school in September and how I am trying to make the most of the time I have left with her before she is there full time. She told me a wonderful story about her and her daughter before she started school and how they made a bracelet together, it made me more determined to make the most of my time with my little girl.

So, after we had dropped my son off at school, we went to the park. We spent an hour or so playing hide and seek, then we sat on a bench and talked about how we'd miss each other come September.

Then we went to play on the park, spotted some snowdrops and looked at the ducks. It was a wonderful way to spend some time, afterwards we went home to warm up and have a hot chocolate.

I missed my son when he went to school but I had my daughter to fill my time and the gap he left, I'm not sure how I will feel come September but I know that half terms, inset days and weekends will become even more precious.

Brewhouse Yard Museum

During Nottingham Light Night, we got to visit Brewhouse Yard, I have been there many times before but it closed a few years back to the public and so we have never had chance to take the children.

This was a great opportunity to discover a huge part of Nottingham's history, the houses and caves are set below Nottingham Castle and are over 300 years old!

There were many uses for these caves, deep inside, they were used as air raid shelters in world war two, I loved the way this one was laid out. You can see the beer kegs in the next room, from when breweries were based here. Castle Rock, a local brewery, takes it's name from this very rock.

In this bedroom there were only candles lighting the room, it was interesting to be able to show the children how it would have been all those years ago.

I loved this beautiful old till, sat amongst a replica of an old chemist the ornate buttons and patterns were beautiful.

Remembering Summer

Last year we went back to a beautiful spot in France, today I am remembering our beautiful holiday and thinking about the sunshine and happy memories with the children.

We spent many a happy hour by the lake on the inland beach...

Bonjour Monsieur Grenouille...

These are the moments that we treasure, these are our magic moments etched on our memories forever...

Snow Fun at the Park

Boxing day evening came with some snow, so not only did we head out that evening to play in the snow, we also headed up to the park in the morning to play and do some sledging.

We headed up to Woodthorpe Park, it has a few huge hills and smaller ones for my daughter, who was climbing up and riding down on her own. We built snowmen and made some snow angels, had snowball fights and drank hot chocolate.

I'm not sure whether we'll have any more snow this winter, so it was good to make the best of it while it was still fresh.

Learning to Draw

This week my daughter has surprised me a in a few ways, firstly when we were in the playground at school she recognised the first letter of her name from the letter cubes on the playground floor. After  speaking to nursery about the recognition of letters we also established she can pick out her name.

Then as we were talking about letters and drawing I asked her to draw a smiley face and she did, she hasn't really shown much interest in drawing up until now so this is a big milestone for us.

You probably can't tell from the picture but this circle has a smile, two tiny eyes and a nose, it is the first time I have seen her draw anything that resembles a face, so I am excited about what we are going to see in the future.

My sons drawings have gone from this, which was his first ever picture of him and his daddy...

To these intricately drawn pictures, full of imagination and a world through a six year old boys eyes, it is a truly wonderful privilege to be the person who sees these pictures and thoughts.

The milestones never really seem to stop and the magic of children and life through their eyes is just wonderful.

Dinosaur Messy Play in the Garden

My daughter loves getting messy in the garden so last week when it was just too nice to be inside I got out the Tuff Spot and filled it with mud, sand, shells, leaves and dinosaurs and she got to get messy and play.

She absolutely love doing this and spent at least two hours getting in there with the dinos!

Not sure about getting in but soon getting down with the dinos...

Lots of fun, it didn't stay looking this near and tidy, by the end of it there was just a mass of sandy mud which I think means it was lots of fun.

It is the perfect activity for getting them to explore and learn about different textures.
